I cycled a total of 2280 miles in 2023, which is slightly more than the entire route of the Tour de France, one of the world’s most famous and challenging cycling races.
I started cycling around 20 years ago and gradually fell in love with it again. I enjoyed the feeling of freedom, adventure, and fitness that cycling gave me. I also liked to explore new places and meet new people along the way.
I decided to set myself a goal for 2023: to cycle at least 2,000 miles in the year. Not much compared to some and an average of about 5.5 miles per day, which sounds manageable, right? Well, not exactly. There were many days when I couldn’t cycle due to bad weather, illness, work, or other commitments. There were also days when I felt tired, lazy, or unmotivated. And there were days when I faced technical problems, such as flat tires. I also joined a local cycling club, the South Essex Group of the Essex CTC, and participated in some group rides and events. I made new friends who shared my passion and supported me along the way.
I kept track of my progress using my Garmin and Strava. By the end of the year, I had my goal by 23 miles. I cycled more than the Tour de France, which covers 2,200 miles in 21 stages over 23 days. Of course, I’m not comparing myself to the professional cyclists who compete in the Tour de France. They are incredible athletes who face brutal conditions and challenges.
Cycling has taught me a lot of things. It has taught me to be persistent, resilient, and optimistic. It has taught me to enjoy the journey, not just the destination. It has taught me to appreciate the beauty of nature.
I hope my story inspires you to pursue your goals and dreams, whatever they may be. You don’t have to cycle more than the Tour de France, but you can do something that makes you happy and fulfilled. Just remember to have fun, be safe, and keep pedalling!
