Today was only my third ride of the year. Between relentless bad weather, a bout of illness, and a fair share of lost motivation, the miles have been slow to come.
It was a beautiful early spring day. Bright sunshine at last after what feels like weeks of constant rain. The temperature sat at a cool but comfortable 12.5°C (55°F), and although there was a steady 13mph breeze (when is there not?), it felt refreshing rather than punishing. Along the roadside, bright yellow daffodils were in full bloom, lining the lanes and verges like nature’s own encouragement. After months of grey skies and sodden roads, they felt like a quiet signal that winter is over. For now anyway!
Rides like this reset everything.
From here on, the goal is simple: get out as often as I can and steadily build endurance and distance. No dramatic declarations.
I want to ride “The Horsepower” audax that I’ve ridden for the past two years, but right now I’m not sure I’ll be up to it. I just need to build steadily, stay healthy, and keep turning the pedals.
Rather than publish an ambitious calendar of events I may or may not make, I’m focusing on two key milestones this season:
- 19 July – London to Southend
- 30 August – Action Medical Research Ride Essex 100
If I fit in some other long rides, audaxes, sportives — or maybe even a cycling holiday — that’ll be a bonus. But this year is about keeping it realistic, staying consistent, and actually turning up.
For now, it’s one ride at a time. The fitness will follow. 🚴♂️

Nice little write up this Tony
