Crab & Winkle is one of Jack Thurston’s Lost Lanes rides through East Kent, combining cycling history, coast and countryside in a wonderfully varied loop from Canterbury.
Following the old Crab and Winkle railway towards Whitstable, the route then hugs the coast through Herne Bay to the ruined towers at Reculver before turning inland through quiet Kentish lanes and villages on its return to Canterbury. At around 32 miles, it’s less about covering big distances and more about exploring with traffic-free sections, country lanes, coastal views and plenty of opportunities to stop along the way.
